Water Treatment & Utilities in Singapore
The Water Treatment & Utility Chain in Singapore
Flow Control for Water Treatment & Utility Systems in Singapore
Water treatment in Singapore covers a broad chain, running from raw and imported water through membrane treatment, water reclamation and desalination to industrial utility supply. These duties combine wet operating conditions, treatment chemicals and near-continuous running, which places steady demand on isolation and control components. Valvewerkz supplies durable, low-maintenance valves intended to hold sealing performance across municipal and industrial water operations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about how valves support flow control, chemical dosing, sludge handling and wastewater operations across Singapore’s water and utility systems.
What material standards apply to valves in contact with potable water in Singapore?
Non-metallic materials in contact with potable water must comply with SS 375 or BS 6920, metallic materials with AS/NZS 4020 Appendix H for extraction of metals, and elastomeric seals with SS 270. Copper alloys must use a composition on the 4MS positive list and, where applicable, pass dezincification resistance testing to ISO 6509.
Should I use a butterfly valve or a gate valve on a water main?
Resilient-seated butterfly valves are generally chosen for large-diameter water mains because they are shorter, lighter and cheaper to install and actuate than an equivalent gate valve while giving bubble-tight bidirectional shutoff. Gate valves are preferred where a full unobstructed bore is needed for pigging or swabbing, or where minimum head loss is critical and a disc sitting in the flow path is unacceptable.
What valves handle sludge and abrasive media?
Knife gate valves are the standard choice for sludge, slurries and media with high suspended solids, because the sharpened gate cuts through solids and the full open bore leaves nothing to clog. They are low-pressure devices and often unidirectional, so confirm pressure rating and flow direction before specifying. Elsewhere on sludge duty, full-bore ball valves with hardened seats and pinch valves are used, and seat wear rather than body pressure rating usually determines the replacement interval.
Do valves for potable water need PUB approval in Singapore?
No separate PUB approval is required, but the fitting must be tested as complying with PUB’s Stipulation of Standards and Requirements for Water Fittings for Use in Potable Water Service Installations by a laboratory accredited by the Singapore Accreditation Council or an ILAC-MRA partner.
